Travel tips

Wherever you travel in the world, it is always best to take precautions and consider such aspects in advance. The Maldives is a safe travel destination, and on this page, we provide some useful tips for your information covering:

  • safety;
  • weather and the environment;
  • health;
  • respecting local laws and the culture; and
  • some helpful links

Safety

In general, if needed, follow the advice of the local authorities.

  • Stay aware: Protests and security concerns are mostly limited to certain areas in Greater Malé. Avoid large gatherings and follow the local advice.
  • Protect your belongings: Keep your luggage secure and do not transport prohibited items like drugs, weapons or alcohol.
  • Choose licensed operators: If booking tours, ensure that your operator is fully licensed with visible certifications.
  • Stay vigilant: While crime rates are low, avoid walking alone at midnight in unfamiliar areas, secure valuables in your hotel room and remain aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid illegal activities: Do not engage with illegal substances or suspicious individuals. Politely decline interactions that make you uncomfortable.
  • Emergency contacts:

    • National Emergency Number: 911
    • Police Hotline: 119
    • Fire and Rescue: 118
    • Ambulance: 102
    • Help Desk: 110

Weather and the environment

  • Monsoon season: The Maldives climate is generally warm and pleasant, averaging around 30°C year-round. However, from May to November, occasional heavy rains may occur. We recommend following the advice of the meteorological services for any necessary precautions.
  • Respect marine life: Avoid disturbing coral reefs or marine species while snorkeling or diving.
  • Sun protection: The Maldives is near the equator, so wear sunscreen, hats and lightweight protective clothing to prevent sunburn.

Health

When you travel the world, you always have the potential to face health concerns. It is no different on the Maldives islands. Please consult your doctor in advance of travel and consider any appropriate injections needed.

  • Food and water safety: Ensure your healthy well-being by consuming only properly prepared food and drinking bottled or filtered water.
  • Insect protection: Our warm climate can attract mosquitoes, especially in the evenings. To stay comfortable, use mosquito repellent and consider wearing long sleeves for extra protection.
  • Avoid contact with stray animals: Refrain from interacting with unfamiliar animals to minimise health risks.
  • Maintain hygiene: Regular handwashing reduces the risk of illness during travel.

Respecting local laws and the culture

Like anywhere in the world, please respect the local laws and take care not to offend:

  • Dress modestly: The Maldives follows Islamic traditions and visitors should wear modest attire in public areas.
  • Remove shoes: Before entering mosques or private residences, please remove your shoes as a sign of respect.
  • Women’s safety: Women travelers are generally safe but should dress modestly, avoid walking alone at midnight and remain cautious in unfamiliar settings.
